Strategic Agenda 2024-2029
02INTRODUCTION
At its meeting in Brussels on 27 June 2024, the European Council agreed on the strategic agenda 2024-2029. It sets the EU’s priorities and its strategic orientations. As such, it will guide the work of the EU institutions.
As part of her candidacy for a second term as President of the EC, Ursula von der Leyen presented Political Guidelines for the next European Commission 2024-2029 and referred to them in her speech to the European Parliament on July 18, 2024.
The Political Guidelines for the next European Commission 2024−2029 inlude a chapter on Putting research and innovation at the heart of our economy``. The following key measures are outlined in this chapter:
- increase research spending to focus more on strategic priorities, on groundbreaking fundamental research and disruptive innovation, and on scientific excellence.
- propose a new European Biotech Act in 2025 as part of a broader Strategy for European Life Sciences to look at how the EU can support its green and digital transitions and develop high-value technologies.
- create the conditions for researchers to thrive by
- providing the infrastructure and innovative laboratories they need to test and develop ideas through new public-private partnerships, such as joint undertakings.
- attract new talents and retaining the best and brightest minds in Europe by strengthening the collaboration between research departments, higher education and business – notably by strengthening our University Alliances.
