The International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) and the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC) are organising a summer school entitled “Science, Policy and Demography: The role of population and migration for sustainable development in the European Neighbourhood”. This event is organised with the support of the Austrian Presidency of the Council of the European Union, and in cooperation with the International Network for Government Science Advice (INGSA) and the Global Young Academy (GYA).

An important challenge faced by policy-makers is to better anticipate future population and migration trends, and to better understand their impact on health, welfare, education and the economy. This is of particular importance in the context of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Better and timelier policy-relevant knowledge and evidence-based analysis, in particular from the social sciences and humanities, would strengthen the response to the challenges posed by demographic developments and fully seize its opportunities. At the same time, there is a need to develop a better mutual understanding of how science and policy-making work, in order to enhance the uptake of evidence by policy-makers. The aim of the summer school is to train both scientists and policy-makers in the communication and application of scientific evidence, using population and migration policies as a test case.
