ESFRI publishes position paper on infrastructure ecosystem
ESFRI, the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures, published a 'Position Paper on the Infrastructure Ecosystem' on 16 September 2026. The position paper presents its vision for a more integrated and strategically coordinated European ecosystem of Research Infrastructures (RIs) and Technology Infrastructures (TIs).
The paper addresses the growing RI–TI continuum and calls for stronger coordination across the European infrastructure ecosystem, while preserving the distinct missions, operational models and user communities of RIs and TIs.
ESFRI also proposes an evolution of its capacities to support this broader ecosystem, including an Expanded Executive Board (EEB) that could strengthen strategic coordination, priority-setting and investment, as well as links with European Research Area governance.
The paper marks an initial step towards a common strategic approach to Europe’s Research and Technology Infrastructures.
