Disasters are becoming more frequent and intense due to climate change. Related damage leads to great economic losses and affects the social system. To reduce the vulnerability of economy and society, we need to seek a nexus between different stakeholders from research and user areas.
The Austrian Disaster Research Days 2019 focus on preparedness for, and prevention of, crises by implementing scientific findings from disaster risk reduction research. This conference is organised by the “Disaster Competence Network Austria” (DCNA) and will take place from 14 to 15 October 2019 at Technical University Graz.

Stakeholders from the public and private sector, from science as well as from humanitarian agencies will come together. In the first part of the conference, international and national speakers will highlight the role of science and technology for disaster risk reduction, the role of the EU Civil Protection Knowledge Network, and will look at how to increase crisis resilience of societies.

Contributions in the second part of the event will refer to scientific findings from a multidisciplinary field covering natural hazards like extreme weather conditions, floods, landslides and industrial disasters. Furthermore the safety of critical infrastructure and the involvement of communities in risk identification will be discussed.
