European science academies call for € 220 billion for FP10

32 European science academies have signed a letter sent to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Commissioner for Budget, Anti-Fraud and Public Administration, Piotr Serafin, Commissioner for Start-ups, Research and Innovation Ekaterina Zaharieva, and President of the European Council Antonio Costa. The letter was written on the initiative of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (OeAW) and its President Heinz Faßmann. It refers to the report High Level Expert Group's report “Align, Act, Accelerate” of Oct. 2024, which makes recommendations for the next Research Framework Programme (“FP 10”) and to which Faßmann has contributed.
In their joint letter, the science academies make three demands:
- The creation of a “comprehensive and strong Research Framework Programme” to strengthen Europe's competitiveness and resilience,
- Substantial funding for the next Framework Programme (2028-2034) of € 220 billion,
- The establishment of mechanisms at EU level to encourage individual nation states to invest in research and development.
