LERU contribution to consultation on next MFF calls for strategic investment in Europe's knowledge future

The League of European Research Universities (LERU) published its contribution to the European Commission’s public consultation on the next Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF). LERU calls for bold, strategic investment in Europe’s knowledge future, centred around a tenth self-standing EU Framework Programme for research and innovation (FP10).
In response to the European Commission’s communication, “The Road to the Next MFF”, LERU stresses that Europe should invest significantly in research, innovation and education, and highlights the proven added value and impact of such investments. LERU is also critical about the suggested absorption of FP10 into a new European Competitiveness Fund (ECF), warning this could jeopardise the independence, balance, and excellence of European R&I funding. Instead, LERU expresses its strong support for a self-standing FP10, with a ringfenced budget exceeding €200 billion, and reminds the EU leadership that a self-standing FP is even a legal obligation under Article 182 TFEU.
