EU and India sign agreement on semiconductors
On 24 November, Thierry Breton, Commissioner for Internal Market, and Ashwini Vaishnaw, Minister for Railways, Communications, Electronics and Information Technology of the Government of India signed a Memorandum of Understanding on semiconductors under the Trade and Technology Council. This agreement sets out how the EU and India will cooperate to build robust semiconductor supply chains and work together on innovation.
Under the Memorandum, the EU and India intend to:
- Share experiences, best practices and information on their respective semiconductors ecosystems;
- Identify areas for collaboration in research, development and innovation among universities, research organisations and businesses;
- Promote skills, talent and workforce development for the semiconductors industry and facilitate collaboration via the organisation of workshops, partnerships and the promotion of direct investments;
- Ensure a level playing field in the sector, including by sharing information on granted public subsidies.
In the field of research and development in semiconductors, the participants intend to establish mutually beneficial collaboration in research, development and innovation in semiconductor technologies; they will:
- Identify areas for mutually beneficial collaboration in research, development and innovation in semiconductor technologies, including advanced packaging technologies, design and raw materials, with the aim of facilitating cooperation among relevant organisations in the respective jurisdictions, such as universities, research and technology organisations, key industry actors and other relevant stakeholders.
- Promote research for sustainable semiconductor value chains.
