Austrian CapTechs/öCapTechs


The European Defence Agency (EDA) organises its R&T priorities in twelve different Capability Technology Areas (CapTechs). The CapTechs are networking fora for experts from government, industry, small and medium-sized enterprises (SME), and academia, moderated by EDA. The goal is to support Member States in their efforts to improve defence research and defence capabilities. The research activities are grouped around the defence competence goals of the Capability Development Plan and the Strategic Research Agendas (SRAs) of each CapTech, which are defined and updated regularly within the CapTech.

According to the EDA model of the CapTechs, Austria is going to found its own national CapTechs, called "öCapTechs", moderated by the Austrian Defence and Security Industry within the Austrian Economic Chambers (WKOÖ), and strongly supported by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Defence and the respective CapTech National Coordinators (CNCs). The kick-off meeting took place on 15 May 2018. Regarding the content, the öCapTechs are based on the EDA CapTechs as well as on the priorities of the national defence research strategy.

There are eleven öCapTechs, some different from the EDA CapTechs, and every CapTech will meet half-yearly. Within the respective CapTech, discussions are grouped around the following topics: Current and future EDA defence research and development priorities; the Austrian national defence research programme; and future PADR, EDIDP and EDF project calls. They are designed as a platform for the exchange of information, coordination of activities, and integration of relevant actors from industry as well as research and academia, and are intended as nuclei for further Austrian collaboration within the framework of EU defence integration.
