New JRC DG Stephen Quest takes up his position

Stephen Quest has been appointed as the new Director-General of the European Commission's Joint Research Centre and is starting his term in office as of this month. In an interview with the JRC, Mr. Quest outlines the main issues and tasks for his term in office.

The new Director-General highlights the "broad perspective" of the JRC, and relishes the opportunity of "playing with innovation and making things happen – both in terms of policy delivery and organisational development". Unsurprisingly, the biggest challenge he sees at the moment is the COVID-19 pandemic and the EU's response to it, however, he also highlights the "twin challenges" of climate change and the need for a green transformation, as well as the impact of digitalisation, claiming that the JRC "has a key role to play in providing the knowledge, understanding and scientific underpinning to guide and support our policy responses to these shared challenges".
