MEPs express concern over EU budget, climate change and Brexit
At its plenary session on 9 October 2019 and ahead of next week’s EU Summit, the European Parliament (EP) called for urgent action to safeguard EU programme funding, to tackle climate change and to avoid a ‘no-deal’ Brexit.
In their debate with Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, Tytti Tuppurainen from the Finnish Council Presidency and EU Chief negotiator on Brexit Michel Barnier, MEPs called for a solution on the next long-term EU investment budget and warned against disrupting EU-funded programmes. They also called for timely solutions on climate change to meet the Paris Agreement goals. With regard to Brexit, MEPs criticised what they called the "current blame game" and the UK government's stance and stressed the importance of avoiding a no-deal Brexit.
