EC appoints new Directors-General for Communication and Internal Market
The European Commission (EC) has announced the appointment of two new Directors General.
With effect of 16 March 2019, current Deputy Secretary-General Pia Ahrenkilde Hansen will become Director-General of DG Communication. Ms. Hansen, a Danish national, will be the first woman to hold this post. She is currently as one of three Deputy Secretaries-General, and the EC's Chief Operating Officer. Ms. Hansen joined the Commission in 1995 and spent almost her entire career working on communication about the European Union and its policies, including as the Chief Spokeswoman of the Commission from 2009 to 2014.
The second appointment is Timo Pesonen, current Director-General of DG Communication, who will become Director General for Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs (DG GROW) as of 1 March 2019. Mr. Pesonen, a Finnish national, will succeed Lowri Evans in this position, who will retire as of 1 March 2019. Before leading DG Communication from 2015 onwards, Mr. Pesonen was head of the private office of Mr Olli Rehn when the latter was Vice-President for Economic and Monetary Affairs and the Euro between 2010 and 2014 and Commissioner for Enlargement from 2004 to 2009, respectively.
