EP Budgets Committee votes for increase of 2019 EU research budget
On 25 and 26 September 2018, the European Parliament's Budgets Committee voted on the EU's 2019 budget. According to the vote, the budget would total €166.3 billion in commitments, which is €717 million more than the original European Commission (EC) proposal.
MEPs increased the budget for the Erasmus+ programme by €362 million and fully restored the pre-EFSI budgets of the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) and the Horizon 2020 programme, adding €256.9 million. The Budgets Committee voted on further increasing Horizon 2020 by another €65 million, and climate-related spending, including climate spending under Horizon 2020, by another €97.3 million.
The corresponding resolution on the 2019 budget will be voted on at the Budgets Committee meeting on 8 or 9 October 2018. The EP plenary will then vote on the Draft 2019 Budget on 24 October 2018, followed by three weeks of “conciliation” talks with the Council. These should lead to a compromise between the EP and Council, in time for the 2019 budget to be voted on by the EP at the end of November 2018.
