JRC publishes Annual Report 2017

The European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC) has published its Annual Report for 2017. The report was released on 7 June 2018.

In 2017, the JRC celebrated its 60th anniversary and this was also the first full year of implementation of the JRC's Strategy 2030. Among the highlights pointed out by the JRC in its report are the following:

  • Providing policy support on several unexpected, complex and sensitive issues, such as the fipronil scandal, or dual food quality;
  • Contributions to several key European Commission initiatives, e.g. the Energy Union or the European Semester;
  • Work on Smart Specialisation;
  • Data management work and setting up several new Knowledge and Competence Centres;
  • Research on aspects of the digital transformation, including cyber security, blockchain and Artificial Intelligence;

The JRC's Annual Report also provides an overview of activities as well as corporate initiatives, international agreements, facts and figures and resources related to the functioning of the JRC.

As the Annual Report was published on the same day the EC presented its proposal for Horizon Europe, the JRC also looks at its future role in the new Framework Programme through which it will continue to be funded. The JRC sees its role as directly contributing to the improvement of the lives of European citizens through research on societal challenges, such as creating a healthy and safe environment, secure energy supplies or sustainable mobility.
