Austrian province of Styria has highest regional research quota in EU at 5.16%
According to the latest suvey of Statistics Austria for 2015, the Austrian province of Styria has increased its regional research quota to 5.16% of its gross regional product, making it the region with the highest regional research quota of all 276 EU regions. Styria is followed by East Anglia in the UK at 4.98% and Baden-Wurttemberg in Germany at 4.94%, which had been the region with the highest regional research quota before. Styria had set itself the target of reaching a 5% research quota by 2020.
Styria invested a total of euro 2.23 billion in research and development in 2015, of which 1.69 billion, or 75.7 percent, were invested by enterprises. The public sector invested euro 543.2 million. When presenting these most recent figures, the Styrian government emphasised the importance of investing in research and development and highlighted the quality of cooperation between enterprises, higher education institutions and non-university research institutions, amongst other issues.
