Karl-Heinz Lambertz becomes new President of Committee of the Regions
On 12 July 2017, the 350 members of the European Committee of the Regions (CoR) elected Karl-Heinz Lambertz (PES), Senator of the German-speaking Community of Belgium, as their new President for the next two and half years. Mr. Lambertz follows on current president Markku Markkula, who is now taking over as the CoR's First Vice-President, the position Mr. Lambertz has held to-date. The election is in keeping with the agreement made between the Committee's two largest political parties – Party of the European Socialists (PES) and European People’s Party (EPP) – which ensures an equal share of the leadership during the five-year term of the office
In his acceptance speech, Karl-Heinz Lambertz claimed that a greater say needed to be given to local and regional governments. His Presidency priorities will be for the CoR to continue to contribute to the reflection on the EU's future, and to fight to protect the cohesion policy. Mr. Lambertz also committed to reinforcing the CoR's ties with all of Europe's cities and regions, and to strengthening relations across the EU's institutions.
