MEPs adopt guidelines on budget priorities for 2018
On 15 March 2017, the European Parliament voted on the guidelines for EU Commission officials preparing the EU's draft 2018 budget. The key priorities identified by the MEPs are growth and jobs, particularly for young people, tackling migration, and climate change. In addition, the budget has to be equipped with tools to enable it to respond to multiple crises simultaneously. It should also address EU citizens' safety and security concerns, MEPs say.
With regard to the priority on growth and jobs, the general rapporteur for the EU Budget 2018, Mr. Siegfried Mureșan from Roumania proposed that the EU "invest more in infrastructure, innovation and research, that we support more SMEs, and that we invest more in entrepreneurs, especially highly innovative entrepreneurs”.
The report on the guidelines for the preparation of the EU budget 2018 was approved by 445 votes to 134, with 101 abstentions.
