European science associations call for extending text and data mining rights
The five European research umbrella organisations Science Europe, LIBER Europe, CESAER, EUA and LERU are calling on Members of the European Parliament to modify the current EU copyright reform proposal. In a joint statement, released on 10 January 2017, they say that amendments in five main areas of the proposal do not go far enough if Europe wants to remove barriers for scientific breakthroughs and to boost innovation. The research organisations call for a copyright reform to provide legal certainty around cross-border research activities and the deployment of new technologies for research and innovation. In the case of Text and Data Mining (TDM) they strongly support the principle that "The Right To Read Is The Right To Mine".
In September 2016, the European Commission proposed a copyright reform as part of the Digital Single Market Strategy aiming at putting Europe at the forefront of a growing digital society.TOP
