New partnership for migration research launched
On 20 June 2016 the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) and the European Commission's Joint Research Centre (EC-JRC) launched a new research partnership to provide science-based knowledge on migration and demography to support EU policy. The new Centre of Expertise on Population and Migration was created in response to a need for better data and research related to the longer term impacts of migration on the population structure of the EU.
The event took place in the framework of the launch of the European Commission's Knowledge Centre for Migration and Demography and was attended by a number of high-level European policymakers including Kristalina Georgieva, Vice-President of the European Commission, Budget and Human Resources, Tibor Navracscics, Commissioner for Education, Culture, Youth, and Sport, Christos Stylianides, Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management, and Carlos Moedas, Commissioner for Research, Science and Innovation.
The new research partnership will be co- headed by IIASA World Population Program Director Wolfgang Lutz, the founding director of the Wittgenstein Centre for Global Human Capital (Vienna, Austria), and by Delilah Al-Khudhairy, Director of Policy Support Coordination at the JRC.
