Science Europe publishes report on research infrastructures
Science Europe has published a survey report on "Strategic Priorities, Funding and Pan-European Co-operation for Research Infrastructures in Europe". Science Europe is a Brussels-based association of European Research Funding Organisations and Research Performing Organisations.
The report aims at extending the understanding of the role of research infrastructures (RIs) in the European Research Area (ERA) by documenting and analysing the decision-making processes of Science Europe Member Organisations with regard to planning, funding and collaboration of scientific research facilities in Europe. According to the report, available funds for research infrastructures are generally limited and do not meet the high demand for RIs in all fields of science. It is therefore important to allocate available funds effectively and ensure the effective operation of existing facilities. The report also points out the decisions needed to build and operate RIs at the national, European or global level and makes 15 recommendations for RI funding and operation.
Science Europe sees its report as a contribution to the ongoing debate on how to deliver a strong RI base for the ERA, to bring together core national funding facilitated by funds from Horizon 2020 and future Framework Programmes to maximum effect.
