Sonja Hammerschmid is first woman to become president of Universities Austria
On 14 December 2015, Universities Austria (uniko - the association of Austrian universities) elected the first woman as its president in its 105-year history: Sonja Hammerschmid is the rector of the University of Veterinary Medicine in Vienna and the new President of Universities Austria, following on Heinrich Schmidinger, rector of the University of Salzburg, whose second term of office expires on 31 December 2015. The new president's term of office starts on 1 January 2016 and expires in December 2017.
Austrian Minister of Science, Research and Economy, Reinhold Mitterlehner, congratulated the new president, who is one of a total of 8 female rectors at Austria's 22 public universities. Mr. Mitterlehner said he was looking forward to cooperating with Sonja Hammerschmid in an approach based on partnership, and emphasised the importance of Universities Austria as a partner in the development of the Austrian higher education sector. The Minister also thanked Heinrich Schmidinger for his objective and constructive cooperation when working towards the common goal of improving the framework conditions at universities over the last years.
