Union for the Mediterranean adopts declaration on blue economy
The Union for the Mediterranean (UfM), a partnership of the EU28, the European Commission and 15 Mediterranean countries, adopted a declaration last week, recognising the potential of the blue economy for sustainable growth in the Mediterranean region and emphasising the need for more research and innovation, closer cooperation and improved maritime governance to promote growth, jobs and investments deriving from the marine and maritime sectors.
The Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) is a multilateral partnership aiming at increasing the potential for regional integration and cohesion among Euro-Mediterranean countries, North and South. The EU's Joint Research Centre (JRC) has contributed to preparing the declaration.
The declaration was signed on the occasion of the UfM Conference in Brussels, a key political event for regional cooperation in maritime affairs in the Mediterranean, against the background of the EU Blue Growth Strategy and its related Action Plan for Innovation in the Blue Economy. In its Ministerial Declaration, the UfM also emphasised the potential of shared and quality assured open data, systems and applications together with digital technologies to make data available and accessible to both public and private sector users so as to stimulate innovation and support a data-driven economy.
