Science Europe publishes opinion on energy efficiency
On 21 September 2015, Science Europe, the Brussels-based association of European Research Funding Organisations (RFO) and Research Performing Organisations (RPO), released an Opinion on "A Common Scale for our Common Future: Exergy as the Measure to Assess and Compare Energy-efficiency Technologies".
The Opinion Paper, which was prepared by the Science Europe Scientific Committee for Physical, Chemical and Mathematical Sciences Science, claims that “The most secure, most affordable and most sustainable energy is that which is never used”. "Exergy" is defined as the actual energy available for a certain use – rather than energy per se, and, according to the Opinion, is the quantity to be used as a real measure of energy efficiency. Science Europe recommends setting up an International Exergy Panel to introduce and promote the exergy concept and its more systematic use.
The Opinion Paper was released on the same day that the Luxembourg EU Presidency was holding the European Strategic Energy Technology Plan (SET-Plan) Conference on European energy policy, research and innovation.
