45 researchers receive ERC Proof of Concept grants
The European Research Council (ERC) has announced the 45 grant holders who will receive Proof of Concept grants, i.e. top-up funding to investigate commercial applications of their frontier research results. The grants are worth up to € 150,000 and cover costs of activities to verify the innovation potential of ERC-funded projects. The Proof of Concept scheme is open to ERC grant holders only.
In the first of three Proof of Concept deadlines for applications in 2015, the ERC has selected 45 researchers based in 13 countries, with projects covering a wide range of topics: from improving the cultivation of medicinal plants, to building car engines using nanomaterials and boosting turnout in elections by increasing the satisfaction of first-time voters. The total budget available for this first 2015 round is € 6.7 million. The country with the largest number of host institutions is Germany (8), followed by the UK (7) Spain (6) and France (5). There is no host institution located in Austria among the grant winners in this round.
The applications submitted in the second round are currently being evaluated, while ERC grant holders can still apply for the third round of the call (deadline: 1 October 2015).
