EP elects a new Vice-President
At its plenary meeting on 20 May 2015, the European Parliament elected Ms. Anneli Jäätteenmäki (ALDE, FI) as the tenth of the EP's 14 Vice-Presidents. In the secret ballot, Ms. Jäätteenmäki received 301 votes in her favour. 285 votes went to the second candidate, Mr. Fabio Massimo Castaldo. The election of a new Vice-President was required following the resignation of Mr. Olli Rehn (ALDE, FI), who was elected to the Finnish parliament in April 2015.
Vice-Presidents may replace the President in performing his or her duties when necessary, including chairing plenary sittings. They are also members of the Bureau, the body responsible for all administrative, staff and organisational matters in Parliament.
