ECOFIN discusses progress in EFSI negotiations
On 12 May 2015, the Economic and Financial Affairs Council (ECOFIN) met to discuss - amongst other issues - progress in its negotiations with the European Parliament on the Investment Plan for Europe and the proposal for setting up the European Fund for Strategic Investments (EFSI). The meeting was chaired by Latvian Finance Minister Jānis Reirs.
Negotiations with the European Parliament will continue on 13 May 2015, with the Latvian Presidency still hoping to reach an agreement by the end of May, despite the remaining differences in the positions of Parliament and the Council, in particular concerning EU sources of funding and the public guarantee for the EFSI. If an agreement can be reached according to schedule, the EFSI regulation should be adopted in June 2015.
