Committee of the Regions calls for EU Urban Agenda

On the occasion of the EU Capital Cities Mayors' Meeting on 21 April 2015 in Vienna, the President of the Committee of the Regions (CoR) Markku Markkula reiterated the CoR's call for an EU Urban Agenda. In addition to social issues such as urban poverty or the integration of migrants, President Markkula also focused on innovation-related topics such as smart cities and urban innovation, saying that "A future EU Urban Agenda should ultimately lead to a genuine cross-cutting anchoring of the urban dimension in the EU decision-making process – in other words, urban mainstreaming – and not to a specific EU strategy or programme", The meeting was also attended by Corina Crețu, EU Commissioner for Regional and Urban Policy

During the day, President Markkula amongst others met with Harald Himmer, Vice-president of the Austrian Bundesrat (Federal Council, the second chamber of the Austrian Parliament which represents the interests of the nine Federal Provinces in the legislative process), to discuss the involvement of local and regional authorities in the European Semester procedure, and with Sebastian Kurz, Austrian Federal Minister for Foreign and European Affairs, to talk about European Neighbourhood Policy and EU enlargement in Western Balkans.

The meeting also highlighted the the exhibition "Smart City Vienna", which presents major initiatives of smart specialisation implemented by the Austrian capital.
