Latvian EU Presidency focuses on ERA and Research Infrastructures

On 1 January 2015 Latvia took over the Presidency of the Council of the EU from Italy. In terms of research and innovation, the Latvian Presidency aims at contributing to the Europe 2020 Strategy by fostering networks without barriers and by fully exploiting the potential of national research and innovation systems. In this context, building strong links between the Innovation Union and the European Research Area is essential. Therefore the Presidency will place an emphasis on enhancing the European Research Area (ERA) through the ERA Roadmap and improved ERA governance. Additionally, the Presidency will focus on ERA implementation aspects, EU added value and the optimal use of public investments in research. The Presidency’s programme also includes the implementation of the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures (ESFRI) Roadmap and the European Research Infrastructure Consortium (ERIC) instrument, and a contribution to better consistency between these instruments and smart specialisation strate gies as well as regional and macroregional policies.
