Call for Twinning Activities

IncoNets EaP and CA Support Twinning Activities -- Call still Open

IncoNet EaP and IncoNet CA, the "STI International Cooperation Networks for Eastern Europe and Central Asia" will implement "Twinning Grants" as a funding instrument---one of the core activities of these projects. Twinning itself has a long tradition in Europe as an efficient instrument in capacity building processes. The IncoNet EaP and CA consortia plan to use this instrument to enhance STI co-operation and increase capacities on both sides. The grant scheme is envisaged to become a tool to develop sustainable co-operation among experienced EU and regional partners in the realm of science, technology, and innovation. Find out more...

» Next ERC Starting Grants (2-7 years after PhD) and ERC Consolidator Grants (7-12 years after PhD) application deadlines are coming up in early 2015. The SEA-EU-NET 2 project is offering a free webinar on 17 December 2014 and Euresearch Switzerland is organising a free training on 6 January 2015 in Berne for interested applicants.
» The VERA project is organising its final conference on the future of the Europan Research Area on 21-22 January 2015 in Brussels.
» BILAT UKR*AINA is organising the 2nd Stakeholder Forum  "Enhancing Ukraine's Competitiveness in RI on the way to the Association to Horizon 2020" in Kiev on 27-28 January 2015.
» The DRAGON-STAR project, a EU FP7 funded INCO-project connecting the EU and China, has regular travel grants available for research projects interested in twinning. News are regularly posted on the website.

General Assembly Meeting

Week of Danube-INCO.NET Meetings in December 2014 in Vienna

After almost 12 months of activity, all Danube-INCO.NET partners will converge in the project's General Assembly in Vienna in order to present and discuss first achievements and next steps. The same day, a joint workshop with EUREKA will be held in the afternoon to debate on mutual co-operation and on the EUREKA-Danube-Call. The meeting will be just one of several events to be held in Vienna during that week. Find out more...


Brokerage Event and Innovation Training Workshop

ener2i Organises Events on Energy Innovation in the Framework of the Top Innovation Event

ener2i invites research institutions, universities, companies, and small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs), as well as business support organisations and other interested stakeholders with innovation targets in renewable energy sources or in energy efficiency from Moldova, the European Union, Eastern Partnership (EaP) countries, and beyond to participate in the ener2i brokerage event on energy on 10-11 December 2014 in Chisinau, Moldova. The brokerage event provides an opportunity for enhancing the co-operation between Moldovan research organisations and businesses, and for establishing direct contacts and partnerships between Moldovan and foreign academic and business representatives, especially those from the EU and EaP countries. Part of the agenda will therefore be dedicated to pre-arranged face2face meetings and networking to find potential partners, present competencies, discuss new project ideas and initiate partnerships for bilateral co-operation or joint projects in Horizon 2020. A limited number of travel-grants for EU companies' representatives to cover travel, accommodation and visa costs are available for participating in the ener2i brokerage event and the top innovation event. Back-to-back ener2i organises it's second training workshop on innovation in energy efficiency and renewable energy on 10 December 2014. This training workshop is intended for stakeholders, researchers, and companies from Moldova. The workshop will facilitate the knowledge transfer from academia to business and support the commercialisation of research results. This workshop is supported by the CEI – KEP AUSTRIA with funding of the Austrian Development Cooperation. Find out more...


Workshop on Geothermal Energy

ALCUE-NET Organises a Workshop on Geothermal Energy in Argentina

In the framework of the ALCUE NET and ABEST III projects and the close collaboration of the Research Institute for Non-Conventional Energy (INENCO) a workshop on geothermal energy will take place on 9-11 December 2014 in the city of Salta, Argentina. A concrete output of the event will be a "preposition paper" to include the topic in the bi-regional co-operation agenda and formulate concrete pilot activities in the field of renewable energy research for the development of existing capacities. About 45 researchers and government officials from Latin America, the Caribbean, and the EU will participate in this event. Austria will be represented by Wolfgang Samhaber, head of the Institute of Process Engineering at the Johannes-Kepler-Universität in Linz. Find out more...


 

Progress on many Levels

Policy Level Co-operation and New ERA-Can+ Webinars

Last week a series of high-level policy dialogue meetings took place under the support of ERA-Can+ in Ottawa, Canada. The Joint Science and Technology Coordination Committee (JSTCC) decided over the focus areas of European-Canadian collaboration, which are in health, marine, arctic, agriculture, information and communication technologies, innovation, and nanotechnology. After a series of ERA-Can+ webinars on different aspects of EU-Canadian science and innovation collaboration, two new webinars are coming up on 16 and 18 December 2014. The first one will focus on the questions posed so far during the previous sessions and will open an interactive space for questions and answers on Horizon 2020 for interested participants from Canada. The second one provides information on the Horizon 2020 EU-Canada co-ordinated call in aeronautics. Find out more and register...

A broad range of ERA-Can+ events are coming up in 2015: One example is the series of information sessions in topic areas as suggested by the JSTCC across Europe and on how Europeans can participate in Canadian research funding programs. Austria will be one target country among Sweden, France, Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, and Spain.


ASEAN-EU STI Days 2015
 

SEA-EU-NET Conference on Science, Technology, and Innovation in ASEAN and EU Member States

The SEA-EU-NET 2 project is organising its annual conference on science, technology, innovation issues and bi-regional co-operation on 17-19 March 2015 in Paris, France. The ASEAN-EU STI Days bring together researchers, scientists, science policy makers, innovative companies, and other stakeholders from ASEAN and EU countries for a yearly three-day conference. It offers insight into the research landscapes of Southeast Asia and Europe as well as great networking opportunities.

The conference will feature expert sessions on major topics regarding the science policy dialogue between two of the most innovative world regions as well as scientific workshops on topics such as health, environment, water, food security and safety, and innovation. The manifold STI Days will also feature a brokerage event for researchers and other stakeholders interested in co-operation between Southeast Asia and Europe, an innovation showcase exhibition for interested institutions, innovative SMEs and projects to participate in, field trips to research facilities in Paris and a paper and poster competition for young scientists. Brokerage Event and Country Reports

2nd ener2i EU Brokerage Event Organised in Brussels and Country Reports on the Energy Sectors of Armenia, Belarus, Georgia, and Moldova Published

On 2 December 2014 the second ener2i EU brokerage event to foster networking and knowledge exchange between transnational and local stakeholders and to support the development of joint projects and co-operative activities took place in Brussels. The event targeted a wide range of companies, universities and researchers from Europe, EaP countries as well as countries associated to the Horizon 2020 programme. The event made it able to foster the creation of consortia for the upcoming Horizon 2020 calls on the three focus areas bioresources, smart cities and regions, and education and training programmes. The ener2i project consortium has published four country reports on the energy sectors of Armenia, Belarus, Georgia, and Moldova as well as a pre-final version of a comparative cross-country report. The reports focus on the potential in energy efficiency and renewable energy sources and provide an overview on available technologies and technology providers, opportunities, and barriers, and address relevant policies and energy strategies. This analysis serves as a basis for the formulation of policy recommendations and the definition of a joint roadmap at a later stage of the ener2i project. Find out more...

 


Workshop on Research Activities and Financing

SUSTAIN EU-ASEAN Organising a Workshop on Gaps in Sustainability Research at the ASEAN-EU STI Days 2015

Based around SUSTAIN EU-ASEAN’s thematic clusters (cities and natural resources), the workshop will focus on identifying and discussing gaps in research activities, particularly gaps in EU-ASEAN co-operation, in the clusters. In order, however, to not only identify problems, but instead to actively work toward their solution, the workshop will also discuss financing possibilities for EU-ASEAN research collaboration, both in general, but particularly in the thematic gaps identified on the day. Workshop and Networking Opportunities at the ASEAN-EU STI Days

IncoNet EaP and IncoNet CA Team up for a Back-to-Back Workshop at the ASEAN-EU STI Days 2015

The IncoNet EaP and IncoNet CA projects focus on the societal challenges climate change, environment, energy, and health; just like SEA-EU-NET 2, the project organising the ASEAN-EU STI Days 2015. Inviting researchers from EaP and CA projects to participate in the ASEAN-EU STI Days 2015 and attend both, a EaP/CA workshop and the other workshops and sessions there will enlarge the pool of researchers present in order to reach a critical mass and to ensure networking on a larger scale on the above mentioned thematic fields. Both slots dedicated to EaP and CA researchers are open for EU and ASEAN researchers. This workshop will inform EU and ASEAN researchers about the research landscape in EaP and CA countries, facilitate networking among the four regions, and build up new contacts and possible consortia for Horizon 2020 calls. First CAAST-Net Plus Stakeholder Forum

Big First Step towards Transferring Knowledge into Solutions for Tackling Global Challenges

On 24-25 November 2014 CAAST-Net Plus held its first stakeholder forum in Entebbe, Uganda. The meeting brought together 50 African and European stakeholders from academia and private sector to discuss Africa-EU policies for innovation systems addressing societal challenges. The forum focused on identifying viable policy options and mechanisms to transfer available knowledge into solutions for improving lives in both areas and to address the global challenges of health, climate changem, and food and nutrition security. Identification of Topics for EU-EaP Co-operation

Successful Thematic Workshop on Climate Change to Identify Research Priorities for the EU-Eastern Partnership STI Co-operation

The workshop, which was held on 6-7 November 2014 in Athens, was organised by IncoNet EaP specifically to identify relevant topics and sub-topics for the EU-EaP STI co-operation. The current meeting focused on "Fighting and adapting to climate change" and "Protecting the environment, sustainably managing natural resources, water, biodiversity, and ecosystems". 21 participants from all six EaP countries and from seven EU Member States took part in the workshop. Starting Shot for a National Technology Platform

Launch of Ukrainian National Technology Platform on Advanced Materials (UNTPAM)

On 24 October 2014 the launch conference for the Ukrainian National Technology Platform on Advanced Materials (UNTPAM) took place in Kyiv. Bringing together the capacities of Ukrainian material science research and industry in this field, UNTPAM aims to strengthen innovative developments, facilitate coherence in national and international co-operation, and initiate the definition of a strategic research agenda for Ukraine. Expected long-term results include a significant acceleration of the implementation of scientific results, improved research funding, an increase in the number of work places, and an improved access to the European and world markets. The event gathered more than 80 participants from the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and its branch institutes, Ukrainian universities, industrial entities, and public organizations. Meeting Organised by Impact Monitoring Task Leader ZSI

ZSI experts held a meeting at the National Commission for Scientific and Technological Research (CONICYT) in Santiago de Chile on 5 December 2014 with ALCUE NET partners. The meeting served the ZSI led impact monitoring of the ALCUE NET project.

 


EU-Russia Year of Science 2014 Closed

EU-Russia STI Collaboration: Good Practice Examples from the Year of Science and beyond

The EU-Russia Year of Science 2014 was closed with a scientific conference in Brussels on 25 November 2014. This final event highlighted the achievements of the Year of Science, presenting good practice examples from areas of mutual interest, and illustrating the potential for science, technology and innovation co-operation. Moreover, it was announced that the Russian Ministry of Education and Science will establish a financing mechanism for Russian participants in projects in certain priority topics under the EU's Horizon 2020 programme. Join the Danube-INCO.NET Database of Stakeholders Active in the Fields of Energy Efficiency, Renewable Energy, and the Bioeconomy!

In the framework of the Work Package 3 “Tackling Societal Challenges: Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy in a Bio-based Economy”, we are mapping the most relevant stakeholders active in the field of energy efficiency, renewable energy and the bioeconomy in the Danube Region. The result of this effort will be a constantly upgraded database that will prove an efficient tool for networking, with the ultimate goal to support concrete cooperation activities and the creation of international partnerships.

Policy Brief Published

INDIGO POLICY Publishes a Policy Brief on the International Dimension of Patenting in India with Special Regard to the European Union

In the framework of the task Support for evidence based policy making, ZSI has prepared a policy brief on co-patenting in India. By providing insights into current burning policy issues such as the intellectual property (IP) protection, the policy brief introduces the readers to the Indian IP Office and general patenting in India. To assess the international dimensions of patents, the report subsequently turns to co-patenting: first on a global scale; looking briefly at the BRICS countries, and finally looking at EU-India relevant cooperation in more detail. For the latter, the analysis is narrowed down to topics selected in the India-EU Strategic Roadmap for Innovation and Research: energy, health, and water, including their respective sub-topics. EU-India STI Co-operation Days Held in Chennai

Important Stakeholders from Science, Academia, Industry, SMEs, and Policy Makers Joined the STI Co-operation Days

Important stakeholders from science, academia, industry, SMEs and policy makers joined the 5th edition of the EU-India STI C-operation Days to discuss on-going and future co-operation and to set the scene for further fruitful initiatives in the field of STI. The event was hosted by the Indian Council of Scientific and Industrial Research in Chennai and co-organized by INDIGO POLICY and INNO INDIGO. The goal of the event was to support the policy dialogue by creating new research and business networks on issues of priority interest for both regions, and to promote funding opportunities offered by the EU, India, bilateral programmes and by industry. SEA-EU-NET 2 Analysis Work in Full Swing

New Report on Framework Conditions for Innovation in Southeast Asia

The SEA-EU-NET 2 analysis team, led by ZSI, has finalised a report on framework conditions for innovation in Southeast Asia. It focuses on the relevance, current state, and future potential of issues such as intellectual property rights, material transfer agreements, and public procurement for innovation in the Southeast Asian context. Analysis results will also be discussed in a workshop "Towards the ASEAN Economic Community" at the ASEAN-EU STI Days 2015 in Paris (see above).

The framework conditions report adds to the previous results of the SEA-EU-NET 2 analysis work, which are of continuous and increasing interest for the stakeholder communities in Southeast Asia and Europe. Recently finished studies have been the reason that SEA-EU-NET 2 experts from ZSI have been invited as speakers and panelists to major stakeholder and networking events such as the InnovateUK 2014 conference in London or the EURAXESS Links ASEAN conferences in Singapore and Bangkok.
