Austria-based EU-project awarded ERIC status

The Austria/Graz-based EU-funded project BBMRI (Biobanking and Biomolecular Resources Research Infrastructure) was awarded the status of European Research Infrastructure Consortium (ERIC) in November 2013. Due to the lack of an adequate legal framework for setting up research infrastructures between EU countries, the European Research Infrastructure Consortium (ERIC) was created by the European Commission in 2009. To be awarded ERIC status means to establish and maintain a research infrastructure and to receive legal personality based on EU law. The ERIC status allows BBMRI to be more flexible in adapting the specific requirements of each infrastructure but also to cooperate with biobanks and biomolecular resources in a pan-European facility. Six projects have been awarded ERIC status throughout the European Union so far.
