Successful research as basis for competitiveness and innovation leadership
Speaking at the New Year’s Reception of the Austrian Council for Research and Technology Development on 27 January 2014, Mr. Mitterlehner, Federal Minister of Science, Research and Economy, emphasised the importance of research as the basis for competitiveness and innovation leadership. In addition to the targets of increasing private funding for research and promoting the importance of research in public perception, the Minister also focused on the importance of the internationalisation of research. He described the European research programmes as the "international architecture for success", since they are oriented along the innovation chain. In order to position Austria among the group of “Innovation Leaders” in the long term, it will be necessary to promote internationalisation efforts in research and to benefit even more strongly from European research programmes, with the target of increasing Austria’s return flow of funds from euro 1 billion in FP7 to euro 1.5 billion in Horizon 2020.
