European Commission postpones Gender Recommendations
In its ERA Communication of July 2012, the European Commission announced the publication of Gender Recommendations to member states in order to improve gender equality at national research organisations. However, the Commission is postponing the publication of gender guidelines until further notice. The Recommendations will be a helpful tool for member states to implement the ERA priority on gender equality and gender mainstreaming in research, which is one of the barriers for implementing a European internal market for knowledge by 2014. They will also be an important signal to member states to put gender issues more prominently on national research agendas. In the recently launched new research and innovation programme Horizon 2020, cross-cutting issues – such as gender – play a more important role than was the case in FP7.
