OECD Conference in Vienna highlights new frontiers in mission-oriented innovation policies
On 28-29 October 2024, the OECD Conference 'Mission Forward: Forging New Frontiers in Mission-Oriented Innovation Policies' took place at the Hotel Savoyen in Vienna. The aim of the conference was to discuss and share experiences on how to design, govern, implement, and evaluate mission-oriented policies.
The event was hosted by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research (BMBWF). Around 130 participants attended the conference, including mission managers, mission policy makers, representatives from academia and industry and technical experts from the OECD, the European Commission, Austria and other EU Member States, and other countries such as the U.S., Australia, Japan, Canada, South Korea, and Brazil. This conference was the first ever event to bring together such a comprehensive panel of mission owners, practitioners and selected renowned academics.
The conference was opened by Minister Martin Polaschek on behalf of BMBWF, and on behalf of the OECD by the Vice-chair to the Committee of Science and Technology Policy (CSTP) Yonsuk Jang. 29 delegates presented their various missions by means of large posters for discussion in individual sessions.
The topics of the conference plenary were:
- Framing the missions to be at the right level of ambition & Enlisting in missions: breaking the mission governance glass ceiling;
- Crowding-in missions: engaging public and private actors in Missions & Delivering on missions: from collective action to systemic impact
- The future of missions and missions of the future
