LERU statement supports guiding principles for knowledge valorisation
LERU, the League of European Research Universities, has issued a statement supporting the European Commission's proposal for a Council recommendation on the guiding principles for knowledge valorisation. The Commission proposal was released on 9 August 2022 and aims to maximise knowledge valorisation and to help fill knowledge valorisation gaps across Member States. In its statement of 30 September 2022, LERU welcomes the proposal and the guiding principles, stressing the "crucial role of universities and their Tech Transfer Offices (TTOs) in boosting Europe’s innovation strength". The Competitiveness Council is expected to adopt its corresponding conclusions end of 2022, early 2023.
LERU welcomes the attention paid to innovation and valorising research results and scientific knowledge, as what it calls "a key process to deliver new solutions to global challenges and opportunities created under the green and digital transformation". The association also supports the guiding principles as a "valuable framework to the various actors and professionals involved in the process", but also points out that it is crucial to recognise the role of universities in the implementation of the guiding principles, since they are embedded in local innovation ecosystems and cover the whole technology readiness level (TRL) spectrum, including deep-tech. LERU's statement aims to contribute to the Commission’s initiative by sharing reflections on the role and impact of universities and their TTOs.
