European Commission seeks input for new European Biotech Act

The European Commission is seeking feedback on the planned proposal for a European Biotech Act, which will aim at advancing the EU's biotechnology sector. A new European Biotech Act was announced in the political guidelines for the European Commission 2024-2029. This new act should focus on unlocking the full potential of the sector, by addressing the regulatory and market barriers that currently limit the scale and competitiveness of biotech firms in Europe. Biotechnologies, supported by AI and digital tools, can help to modernise entire parts of the European economy. In the EU, biotechnology reached a gross value added of €38.1 billion in 2022.
Stakeholders, including businesses, innovators, researchers and civil society, are encouraged to participate in the call for evidence, which will run until 11 June 2025. The proposal is due in 2026.
