EU and Japan announce Competitiveness Alliance
At the 30th EU-Japan Summit, leaders set out an ambitious plan to deepen cooperation in research, innovation, and economic security. Highlighting the spirit of the Osaka World Expo, both sides emphasised the strategic importance of working together amid global challenges.
The key pillars for future collaboration are as follows:
- Economic Security and Green Transition
The summit agreed to intensify efforts on secure supply chains, critical infrastructure, and the circular economy. New initiatives will target clean technology and resource recycling, alongside a working group to enhance secure digital connections, specifically with submarine cables, including Arctic routes. - Shaping Global Rules and Open Trade
The EU and Japan reaffirmed their commitment to open, fair trade and plan to work together to reform the World Trade Organisation, ensuring global trade rules respond to today’s challenges. The EU will also deepen cooperation with CPTPP countries to lead these efforts. - Research and Innovation
Negotiations are underway for Japan to join Horizon Europe. Both EU and Japanese leaders hope to finalise this deal soon, allowing for joint advancements in science and technology.
