EU and United States sign joint statement on research & innovation cooperation

On 17 January 2025, the European Union and the United States signed a joint statement on research and innovation cooperation. The signature of this statement, under the EU-U.S. Agreement on Scientific and Technological Cooperation, reaffirms the engagement of both sides to deepen their partnership on research and innovation to address pressing global challenges, from climate change to health crises. It also aims to foster scientific excellence and shared values such as openness, academic freedom, research ethics, and evidence-based policymaking.
The joint statement was signed by Marc Lemaitre, Director General for Research and Innovation at the European Commission, and Jennifer R. Littlejohn, Acting Assistant Secretary for Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs at the US Department of State.
The statement is based on the conclusions of the Joint Consultative Group meeting of March 2024, and cooperation takes place under the EU-U.S. Agreement for Scientific and Technological Cooperation
