EP position on EU budget for 2025 demands focus on research, education, health and climate action
The European Parliament (EP) plenary adopted its position on the EU budget for 2025 on 23 October 2024. The EP proposes an overall budget of almost €201 billion (this is € 1.24 billion more than the European Commission's proposal of June 2024), with a focus on research, education, health and climate action.
The EP states that it wants to boost programmes vital in addressing health challenges, supporting young people, agriculture and rural areas, helping people suffering from natural disasters, boosting climate action, managing migration and security needs, and strengthening EU support for neighbouring regions experiencing geopolitical and humanitarian crises. MEPs therefore restored €1.52 billion in funding cuts proposed by the Council, and set payment appropriations at €153.5 billion.
The EP's vote will be followed by three weeks of “conciliation” talks with the Council, with the aim of reaching a deal for next year’s budget in preparation of the next ECOFIN Council on 15 November 2024.
