EP adopts resolution on a new vision for European University alliances
The European Parliament adopted a resolution on 'A new vision for the European university alliances', at its plenary meeting in Strasburg on 11 September 2025. The report states amongst others that the EP ''is notably worried about the lack of research and innovation pillars within the alliances given the current framework, as it undermines the full potential for cooperation between universities within alliances". In the debate preceding the adoption, it was stressed that there should be a greater emphasis on strengthening research and innovation and on developing Europe’s research skills-base. The report was adopted with 461 votes in favour and 100 against. The European Commission is planning to continue funding the alliances mainly through Erasmus+. It is not clear as yet whether there will also be top-up funding by the Research Framework Programme or the European Competitiveness Fund.
