EC sets up open access platform for scientific papers from H2020/Horizon Europe
On 24 March 2021, the European Commission (EC) launched 'Open Research Europe', a publishing platform for scientific papers that will be accessible to everyone. The platform will present the results of research funded by Horizon Europe and Horizon 2020.
The EC states that Open Research Europe will give everyone, researchers and citizens alike, free-of-charge access to the latest scientific discoveries. It directly addresses major difficulties often associated with publishing scientific results, including delays and barriers to the re-use of results and high costs. The platform is an optional service for Horizon Europe and Horizon 2020 beneficiaries so that they can comply with their funding requirements for immediate open access, at no cost to them. Approximately 40 scientific papers from very diverse fields of research have already been submitted and are available for the scientific community to read and review.
The Open Research Europe platform was introduced in the EC Communication 'A New ERA for Research and Innovation'. The platform is intended to contribute to open, fast and cost-efficient scientific publications, as well as to making it easy for beneficiaries of Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe to comply with the relevant open access terms of their funding. The platform features a wide range of metrics to measure the scientific and social impact of articles and provide information of their use and re-use.
The Commission states that by establishing this platform, it intends to lead by example in actively supporting open science practices and promoting transparency in the publishing process. It aims at inspiring other funders, in particular at national level, to do the same.
