EC appoints new Director-General at its Joint Research Centre

On 17 June 2025, the European Commission appointed Bernard Magenhann as Director-General of the Joint Research Centre (JRC). The JRC delivers independent, high-quality research upheld by strong standards of integrity and transparency. It anticipates emerging challenges and provides policymakers with clear, evidence-based insights to support EU policies. The appointment will take effect on 1 July.
Mr Magenhann, a French national, has over 20 years of expreience in the European Commission and has been with the JRC since 2020, where he currently serves as Acting Director-General and Deputy Director-General. Prior to this, he was Deputy Director-General at the Directorate-General for Human Resources and Security (DG HR), where he oversaw organisation development, talent management, account management, finance, procurement, and internal control. Earlier in his career, he was Director for Resources Management and Optimisation at the Directorate-General for Informatics (DIGIT), as well as Head of Unit for Internal Audit and Business Process Re-engineering in DG HR and Head of Unit for Regulatory Agencies in the Internal Audit Service (IAS). Mr Magenhann joined the European Commission in 2002 after working for several years as a consultant.
