EC appoints Martin Kahanec (CEU) as member of group of Chief Scientific Advisors

The European Commission has appointed Martin Kahanec, Professor at the Department of Public Policy at the Central European University in Vienna as a new member of the Group of Chief Scientific Advisors, which is part of the Scientific Advice Mechanism (SAM) of the Commission. Prof. Kahanec's mandate is three years, renewable once it for two more years.
The Group of Chief Scientific Advisors is a key part of the SAM mechanism. It was set up in 2019 and consists of up to seven eminent scientists appointed in their personal capacity by the Commission, each representing diverse fields, from natural and social sciences to engineering and the humanities, to ensure a truly interdisciplinary approach to EU policymaking. Their role is to provide high-quality, timely and independent scientific advice to the College of European Commissioners on any subject, including on policy issues that the European Parliament and the Council consider to be of major importance. By informing decision-making, the Group contributes to the quality of EU policy making and legislation.
Martin Kahanec is a Professor at CEU’s Department of Public Policy and Director of The Shattuck Center for Human Rights at CEU. His main research interests are economic policy, labour and population economics, migration, EU mobility, ethnicity, and reforms in European labor markets. Professor Kahanec has held several advisory positions and leading roles in a number of scientific and policy projects with the World Bank, the European Commission, European Parliament, European Labour Authority, European Court of Auditors, and other international and national institutions.
