Chief Scientific Advisors publish new opinion on the biodegradability of plastics
On 14 December 2020, the European Commission’s independent Group of Chief Scientific Advisors (GCSA) delivered a Scientific Opinion on the Biodegradability of Plastics in the Open Environment. In their opinion, the GCSA provides recommendations to assess which specific applications of biodegradable plastics in the open environment offer potential environmental benefits over conventional plastics.
The Advisors recommend to use biodegradable plastics in the open environment for specific applications for which reduction, reuse, and recycling are not feasible, rather than as a solution for inappropriate waste management or littering. To realise the potential environmental benefits over conventional plastics, they recommend supporting the development of coherent testing and certification standards.
The recommendations will contribute to informing the forthcoming Commission’s policy framework related to bio-based, biodegradable and compostable plastics, and help define the main challenges and policy actions needed in this area.
