On 11 September 2019, the European Commission (EC) adopted a Communication reaffirming the EU's commitment to accelerated climate ambition. The Communication was released in preparation of the Climate Action Summit by the United Nations Secretary General in New York on 23 September 2019. In the Communication, the EC indicates the concrete actions the EU has already taken regarding its Paris Agreement commitments, together with its activities to establish an Energy Union with a forward-looking climate change policy. The EC highlights the fact that the EU is the first major economy to put in place a legally binding framework to deliver on its pledges under the Paris Agreement and that it is trying to achieve climate neutrality by 2050.
