02INTRODUCTION
Future & Emerging Technologies (FET) stand for frontier research and innovation with a high potential impact on technology, economy and society. High-risk and long-term research is characteristic and lays the foundation for radically new technological possibilities. Converting new knowledge into industrially applicable technologies is the driving force of the FET programme. Hence, FET is complementary to the European Research Council (ERC), which focuses on excellent individual researchers, and incremental research in other collaborative schemes. In terms of disciplines, FET goes beyond the conventional boundaries into unknown territories, relying on cross-fertilisation and synergies between different advanced sciences (e.g. physical sciences, information sciences, life sciences, environmental sciences, social sciences) and cutting-edge engineering disciplines.
