Academic Careers: A Cross-country Perspective

01DESCRIPTION

The European Commission published a survey on career choices in academia. The survey was carried out by WIFO within the WWWforEurope project. The aim of this survey was to examine the determinants of career choices in academia. It also refers to the asymmetric mobility of highly talented scientists between the US and EU. The findings of the survey show that both early and later stage researchers prefer a balance between research and teaching, working with high-quality peers, appropriate salaries and the availability of external grants. While the US academic career system already provides appropriate salaries, good working conditions and working with high-quality peers, thus being a destination of choice, a reform could enhance the international attractiveness of the European academic system.
